Week 7 Term 2

On Monday I learnt how to add and subtract fractions and multiply and divide fractions in maths. We also had volleyball which I had never played before, but I really enjoy it and i am quite good at it. On Tuesday in tech arts we started to make balloon cars and we could only use 4 wheels, 2 straws, 2 wooden picks, 1/2 a sheet of cardboard, tape and scissors. You could be in up to groups of three, but I chose to go by myself. On Tuesday I was picked for the volleyball and we lost by 6 points against room 5 ( the best class at volleyball) and it was really close. On Wednesday we learnt how to count to twenty in French. On Thursday I had band and we learnt two new pieces but the beginners and the seniors were crammed into the music room so it was not very spacious. On Friday we had Maori and we learnt about the battles of Orakau, Paterangi and Rangiaowhia. LAter that afternoon we also had sport, but I was doing football training for Belmont.

Week 6 Term 2

This week we had inter-house winter games. I played football and we were undefeated.  Waipa my house, won the whole thing and we still have the most points. In maths I learnt how to add and subtract fractions. It was only a 4 day week as it was the Queens birthday on Monday. Last week I also finished all of my ratio maths so I could move onto adding and subtracting fractions. In science we learnt about mass and density and how on different planets they are different but on earth they are the same. We got given 2 more tasks a book review and a piece of persuasive writing. Science fair is coming up quickly and I still need to do my experiment but I have done everything I can without doing my experiment.

Week 4 Term 2

On Tuesday WIMS football was postponed to Thursday. We did very well winning one out of four and only losing by a 1-2 goal margin. For Jump jam we learn't a new routine and room 3 won. For science on Tuesday we made a balloon aircraft that had to travel from one side of the room to the other only with a balloon, some string, tape, scissors, 2 pins and a straw that had to be connected to the balloon. I was with Max and Shaun and we completed it in the room so we moved out to the foyer then we completed that but we didn't have enough time to go outside and do it across the court. On Friday for our other tech arts session we started to make a marble run that had to make the marble go for 20 seconds no more no less. Shaun and I started to make the base. Mrs Tyson the science teacher will test it three times to see if the average is 20 secs.

Week 3 Term 2

This week we I had band camp with other students from Matamata and Cambridge middle schools. We had a concert on Thursday night, we performed multiple songs and the drum line, choir and senior band all played others. On Monday we did volleyball in the alc I really enjoyed it and I think I am pretty good at it as well. On Tuesday I have WIMS football I am looking forward to it. For science in tech arts we made pieces of tea bags float. By lighting them at the top and then it burned down to the bottom but some heat was stuck inside it so it rose until there was no longer any hot air inside.

Week 2 Term 2

This week I learn't how to work out bearings in maths. Their is two types. True bearings and compass bearings. I was a bit confused at the start but now I have the hang of it. At the start of the week we had a maths test and I didn't do to bad. I got about two or three wrong. The maths test was all of the things that we have done since the start of the year.

This term there is inter-class dodge ball and volleyball. The volleyball team has won both of their games, they are very good. I was in the dodge ball team and we lost to room 1.  Next week we have a band camp from Wednesday - Thursday. We have to practice a lot of songs so we can play them. On Thursday night we are having a concert. We are doing it with Matamata and Cambridge middle schools. This term is science-fair which happens every two years and every student has to participate in it. I have decided to do the question: How does the surface type affect the bounce height of a basketball?

On Friday we had our last hard material tech arts session. I did not finish but only a couple of people did so he will let us come up to finish ours of. Our next tech arts is science so it is perfect timing for science-fair. On monday we are starting report writing I am doing it on Giraffes. On Wednesday we had French and learn't how to ask what is your name. We also went over some things that we have already done, as well as having lots of conversations.

Week 8 and 9

These to weeks have been short so I am doing two weeks in one blog.

Week 8
I found out I had made it into the football team. I was very pleased about that. Also everyone said goodbye to the Makahari students travelled back to Japan. I think they had a great time here finding out about how we live and what things we do compared to them. We played softball against room 13. They are very good and it was a close game which came down to the very end. We were winning by oneand they had just started batting. Amazingly we got two outs before they got any home. But we made a which lead to them getting two home and them winning the game.

Week 9
On Wednesday I had french which I am really enjoying. We are learning new words all the time I like it because it tests me a lot. Mrs Shaw is very nice and a very good teacher. Thursday! I was ready for the weekend and I was getting so tired. My house (Waipa) won school singing and that afternoon we had a interhouse summer games. I chose padder tennis, I won two games and lost two games. I think I did very well and did the best of my ability. Tech arts, my favourite day of the week. Tech arts is probably my favourite thing at school right now. I am doing hard materials and we are making a truck. The teacher is Mr Graham is very nice and funny. I find making the truck exciting but kind of scary when I am using some of the tools. I had an amazing week although I was looking forward to the weekend.

Week 7 Term1

Bonjour, Je suis Josh. On Monday we started a brain inquiry. What is the effect of left brain right brain on how people learn? Can it be changed? How? Luckily we have Te Wehi in our group and she does lots of work at home. The topic is very interesting and I find it quite fascinating. On Tuesday we had our last tech arts and I finished of my bag. It has Josh on the front with the word "football" inside a football. Also I made a strap with Velcro and a pocket inside. I am very proud of myself for making that as I think it looks great. I am looking forward to our first hard materials lesson because we did not have it on Friday. I also football trials on Tuesday as I am trialing for the intermediate team. We also had trials on Friday. On Wednesday we had French and learn't how to introduce ourselves and start counting to ten. The same day we also had jump jam with rooms 2,15 and 16. We won it jointly with room 16. On Thursday I started of the day with band from(9-10:40), and I really enjoyed it although we don't play all of the time you can still listen and do the notes without playing, it is really good because you also hear different instruments. Friday. I was really looking forward to Friday I had tech arts, football trials and basketball practice. Unfortunately tech arts wasn't happening but I loved football trials although it was raining.

My Waitangi Treaty Explanation

What is the Treaty of Waitangi ?

Learning Intention: To use the structure and language of explanation to write about The Treaty of Waitangi

The Treaty of Waitangi is a Treaty between New Zealand and the English in which New Zealand would benefit from because they would get protection and supplies but England would own most of the land which the Maori didn’t understand. There was lots of disagreement between Chiefs and Tribes which on Waitangi day nowadays still happens. Waitangi day was first known officially as New Zealand day in 1960, later changed back to Waitangi Day. In 1963 it became a public holiday in the North Island and became a national holiday in 1974.

When was the Treaty of Waitangi ? The Treaty was signed by most chiefs on February 6th 1840, But the soon to be governor sent by Queen Victoria,  William Hobson arrived on January 29th and had six days to write a treaty and get it translated to Maori by Henry Williams to actually get the Maori to agree before they got bored and left. Only forty Chiefs signed that day but others left therefore Missionaries had to travel around the country gathering more signatures, some even from chiefly women. Soon after the Treaty of Waitangi New Zealand had access to many valuable foreign supplies.

After New Zealand signed the treaty, in 1857, people brought in the first dairy cows in because the trading market in New Zealand opened up to most of the world, even though lots of people were still quite reluctant to trade. New Zealand then had a lot more supplies but also a lot more Europeans that were quickly multiplying the population. In the 1870’s the Maori were outnumbered ten to one by settlers as most of them did not know the Treaty rules.

Hone Heke ( a significant chief), cut down the English flagpole three times because he was angry at them, he offered them half of his land and they took that offer but they were greedy and kept on taking more and more of his land. He got angry and wanted to show them he was annoyed and valiant. He chopped it down twice but then the governor placed guards around it. Hone Heke gathered his men and took his men there at nightfall, they quickly scared them off and cut down the flagpole for the third and final time.

Why is there a Treaty? A treaty between England and New Zealand was created to benefit for both countries. Better trade and supplies for New Zealand and the English even said they would give them guns and other valuable resources. But New Zealand would then be part of the English colonies which not everyone agreed with. The English wanted New Zealand to join forces with them so they could take most of their land and then put European settlers on all of the land that they would gain. The Natives wanted to be independent and have freedom. But some Maori like chief Hone Heke thought it would be great because they got tobacco, blankets and can still keep their land, but the thing is they could only keep some, because Henry Williams (the translator) and his son Edward tried to make the Maori translation easier to understand, but he actually accidently changed the meaning.

As the Treaty had brought advantages and disadvantages into New Zealand most people were happy. It had stopped fights between the Maori, although it did bring a couple of fights between the Natives and the settlers. Hone Heke was definitely happy when he signed the Treaty, he even got to put his name at the top and become famous in New Zealand. But he would have changed his mind a bit, especially with the hundred of thousands of settlers flocking into the country quickly taking his land. New Zealand had changed forever and for most people it was great. In the end New Zealand got a very limited amount of protection and they didn’t really stick to the Treaty either.

Week 6 Term 1

It has been another "Super" week. I had French on Thursday and we learn't how to spell our name and introduce ourselves. I am really enjoying it and I think everyone else is too. My favorite part that lesson was when we spelled out the  alphabet. Most of the letters sound quite similar but some sound very unique. We also had Softball on Tuesday and we won again 18-2, I was in the team and got two home runs. Softball was probably my highlight of the week because you have to run fast to get home if you don't want to get out and when you are fielding you can catch people out. I was a "short stop", that means I was one of the three people inside the diamond. The pitcher and another short stop.

Tech Arts is another thing I look forward too every Tuesday and Friday. At the moment we are making bags with handles, a inside pocket, a design on the outside and Velcro to hold things in on the top of the bag. On Tuesday we did a water safety activity in our school pool with three swim waipa instructors. It was fun when I was in the boat and also when we suba dived off. We learn't to wear life jackets when we are on boats, paddle boards, jet skis and on rocks. We also learn't to huddle together so you do not get cold.

I had Football trials at school yesterday and I am going back on Tuesday for more. On Wednesday I finished my Waitangi Treaty explanation and I think mine was very good and I described it very well. We have Student Led Conferences coming up and we have been writing a report about ourselves and then explain how we are going at school. On Friday lunchtimes now I have an extra Alto Saxophone lesson because we are still learning how to play it. I think that I enjoy that more than my lesson on Tuesday's because I have actually learn't things that help me.

Week 5 Term 1

Another great week. This week I had WIMS Swimming and also school swimming sports. I didn't do that well in the Inter schools Swimming but in school swimming sports from six races I got three wins and three thirds, which I am very happy with. I also went to WIMS Cricket in Hamilton as a reporter, I now have to write a report for the magazine. In class we have started to do maths and I am really enjoying it. I am happy with my test results even though a couple are not that good, now I now what I need to work and improve on. On Tuesday we had Inter-Class Softball, I was in the team again and we won 18-1 but it wasn't that easy. I really enjoy softball even though I am still learning it because I have never played it before and it challenges me when we come up against other classes because we don't know how good they are so I go hard even though I always do on everything. Every week something new challenges me and that is what I love because then I don't get bored. I am looking forward for another great week.

As you will have seen on my blog we created Vision boards about what we hope to do/ have in the future. For friday sport I am going to be playing Softball which is today. I have made lots more friends now and now I play with them most of the time. At the start of the week at assembly I got a Principals award one of six. I am very proud of myself especially it being the first ones handed out this year. In tech Arts last week we made pencil cases, I made a Blue one with a Purple zip, now i wish I had used a red zip but i still think it was very good. Today we will be starting on a cushion cover, but I do not know what to put on it yet. We have learnt a lot about Waitangi day because we are going to the museum next week and we will have to write a report about it. By watching some videos it was very interesting how not everyone agreed but then changed their minds.

Week 2 of Intermediate

The first 2 weeks of intermediate has been amazing. All of the opportunities and you can take is unreal and if you don't want to do things you miss out. My brain is still switching back on but i am slowly remembering things a have already learnt. It is very exciting getting to know the year 8's and some of the year 7's, as we all try to communicate to each other. I have got to know the school a lot better and now I can navigate myself through the school quite easily. I have already made lots of new friends that are really fun, but it has really been awesome catching up with old friends especially the year 8's. I am hoping to play 2 instruments continue playing the Drums and start playing the Alto Saxophone as it sounds very fascinating. The pool has been great even though some people delayed our swimming for a couple of days I have still had so much fun in it, also I have been in it in some lunch times. My highlight though is P.E it is very competitive but also very funny especially when we are playing softball and now we have been split into quite even teams although my team has won both the games we have played while we have been in these teams.Tech arts has been really cool I have been doing fabric were we have been making soft tennis balls to start of with.I hope the next following 2 years are going to be just as good as my first 2 weeks have been.
